Macular Degeneration

I have recently developed Macular Degeneration of the eye.  Mine is the Diabetic "Wet" kind.  Does anyone want to discuss this disease and learn more?

My father has the dry kind

My father has the dry kind and his eye dr said that the wet kind was faster acting and would be worse.  His doctor also suggested that he start taking a multi-vitamin that is specially designed to improve eye health.  It is called Visi-Vite.  He hasen't been taking it long, but it was highly recommended by the Dr.  You can order it online, the website address is www.visivite.com/ .  Hope this helps.

I've been taking the

I've been taking the Equate/w Lutein which is the same formulation as the Bauch and Loamb multi vite that my Dr told me to use.  Have used it for about a year now.  You are right in that Wet Degeneration is much harder to treat.  However, with the new injections of things like Macugen they are hopeful that they can at least slow it down a bit. The Dr says he has really good results from it.   I had my first one on Tuesday.  So have quite a red eye right now.  I will share with you that the injection itself was painless.  Other than a slight burning from the numbing agent I felt nothing.   It does from time to time feel like I have sand paper in my eye as it heals up.  I have to take antibiotic drops for 4 days.  Other than that no special treatment.  I can only hope for the best at this time as i'm in the early stages of the disease.  My left eye is the one that is showing effects as I have some distorted vision with it.   For instance if I look at letters with the left eye they are warped..  And straight lines are wavy.  The other eye is ok at this time.  I will also tell you that without health insurance this injection would be hard to come by.  Just one is about $2300.00.  And you have to have a series of them.  Some people have to have them every 6 weeks.    So it's very expensive.  Thank God for our military retirement insurance!!  This disease is either age related or a result of diabetis.  And it is going to epidemic proportions.  So I would recommend that people have a good insurance plan to deal with this kind of thing if it should happen to them.
