One of my favorite hobbies is flower gardening. Here in the midwest we have a fairly long growing season so there is lots to do in the garden. We've had lots of rain during February and March so it should be a good growing season. I'm looking forward to some warm Spring days soon so I can clean up my flower beds because many perenials are sending up their new greenery.

I love a good garden. I
I love a good garden. I only have about a 6 x 9 space to plant in, and I always try and plant more than I should. Something usually gets choked out (this year it was my onions) but the rest grow well!

We have a villa outside the city and a big garden attached to it. Frankly, I don't like gardening much.
Is anyone out there good at
Is anyone out there good at growing tomatoes??? I have planted a few plants and they are very bushy, there are LOTS of blooms on them, but when it is time for the fruit to set on the blooms wither and fall off. What am I doing wrong??? Do they need special fertilizer, is there something that I could be doing differently. I really enjoy home grown tomatoes and am getting VERY frustrated.
Most tomatoes these days are
Most tomatoes these days are self-pollinating, as in they don't need bees. If your flowers are just dropping off, it is most likely too hot or too humid and the pollen is getting too sticky to properly pollinate the flower. Try lightly tapping each flower early in the morning to help distribute the pollen before the day really heats up and starts causing problems. Good luck!
If they're blooming, that's
If they're blooming, that's good! Tomatos set fruit just after they bloom if they've been visited by enough bees. If you don't notice any bees, get a feather and tickle each bloom to simulate pollination that a bee would do. You'll get tomatos, don't fear!!
I recently changed my house
I recently changed my house and my previous house didn't have garden as I was in first floor of a flat. But now I am in a HOME. I mean, I am in a house with garden. I regularly Feed myself the knowledge of gardening. ;) A new hobby.
Oooohhhh...a clean slate!
Oooohhhh...a clean slate! How lucky are you?! We moved into this house in '97 and it was a clean slate as well....now it's an overgrown jungle!! I dug out all of the grass/weedy things and replanted with all sorts of stuff. It's like a mad scientists outdoor lab out there though, but I love it!!
I love gardening but do
I love gardening but do manage to kill everything by either over watering or forgetting to water totally!
I am so terribly jealous of
I am so terribly jealous of anyone with a plot of earth in which to plant something.
I have a dark apartment and have thought about having a garden forever but it's not going to happen.
So I do the next best thing. I look at other people's gardens and watch gardening shows. I also get all the plant catalogs I can and just spend time daydreaming.
Lately I have been looking into organic gardening shows. It's all interesting.
You lucky people. Enjoy your garden for me too.
I am slowly getting things
I am slowly getting things together. First there was the pergola in the back yard, which my husband built last summer.
About 3 weeks ago I got climbing Hydrangeas and put them in the grond to climb around the pergola, they seem very happy. I wanted to get Hostas a couple of weekends ago, but they were sold out!
I want to get a grape vine for the front yard but I have to save up for that. Does anyone know how late into June I can put those in the ground? Will I have to wait until next year? Can I still plant a grape vine this year?
Did you get it in the ground
Did you get it in the ground yet? I think it would be all right, even though it's fairly warm. Maybe wait until it cools off a little in the fall. Just keep it watered and such really well and it should do fine. Mulch it over the winter and watch out for those late freezes in the spring.
I'd love to take up
I'd love to take up gardening, but it's one of those activities I keep promising that I'll do and never start... :(
Yes, I enjoyed the wonderful
Yes, I enjoyed the wonderful spring here in Kansas. Today, the Sunday before Memorial Day, was the first day it felt HOT to me. I have planted to many things to list in my garden this year. I've been enjoying getting out in the yard. I'll begin going out early in the morning and late in the evening to beat the heat soon! ;)
I wish where I lived was
I wish where I lived was nice all the time. Sadly it's ALWAYS mucky out. It's always so gross around here I want to live somewhere where I can have a nice looking garden all year round.
I would kill for a long
I would kill for a long growing period! That would make things great here! It doesn't even feel like spring where I live. They shut down the freeway today with the snow. I'm ready for spring!
Re: I would kill for a long...
Its still snowing there? I would move right away :) Its cold right now, but not freezing my any means.
I agree. The only thing
I agree. The only thing that could keep me somewhere colder than Kansas is family. Somedays Kansas isn't warm enough for me. I'm thinking Florida. :)
Re
I am wondering, whats the range of temperature there in Kansas. We have cold winters here. I can imagine it gets cold there, but I never really have been there durring the winter. Here in PA durring the winter it averages anywhere from 20-40º although it can get colder. This year was not that bad here, how about there?
I am glad it is getting
I am glad it is getting warmer so I can work in my Garden. I am tired of all the rain we are getting right now so and warm weather will be gladly taken.
I completely agree. Parts
I completely agree. Parts of my garden are flooded today. I'm thinking I'll have plants popping up everywhere instead of rows this year.
Now is the time a year to
Now is the time a year to cut back some of the plants that don't lose their leaves in the winter.
Its also the time to plant some nice looking Geraniums.
