Salina City Commissioners will vote Monday to formally approve the resignation of commissioner and vice mayor Jerry Ivey and begin the process of filling the vacant seat, with a new vice mayor required as well. Ivey submitted his resignation paperwork this past Monday, with the resignation effective Friday. The city will follow state law, which requires a replacement within 60 days of the resignation date.

Commissioners will also discuss operations of the Salina Animal Shelter. The city has received an operational overview, shelter policies and procedures, and the results of an onsite assessment conducted by Animal Shelter Services, LLC, though the firm’s final report has not yet been provided. City staff say several operational challenges and concerns were identified during discussions with the firm.

City staff expect the full report within the next two weeks and are seeking direction on whether to develop and advertise a Request for Proposal for shelter operations. If directed to proceed, staff anticipate preparing the RFP in about two weeks, with responses due roughly 30 days after release, followed by review, scoring, and presentation to the City Commission for consideration. If a contractor is selected, animal control would remain an internal city function, with the RFP designed to distinguish contracted shelter operations from city-retained animal control.
