Allen Community College soccer keeps friendlies on campus in Iola

Allen Community College’s men’s and women’s soccer teams will play their upcoming friendlies on campus instead of at the newly turfed field at Riverside Park in Iola, according to ACC Athletic Director Doug Desmarteau.

The men’s ACC Alumni Game is set for Aug. 8, and the women’s team’s exhibition home opener against Hutchinson Community College is scheduled for Aug. 12. The Riverside Park turf work is expected to debut Sept. 11, when the Iola High School Mustangs host the Burlington Wildcats. The article says turf installation began last week, and painting of numbers, hash marks, and endzone lettering started this week.

Keeping ACC’s early home games on campus is tied to giving the Bermuda grass at the ACC soccer fields time to be reseeded and rehabilitated after winter conditions made it susceptible to winter kill. The friendlies set up the Red Devils’ regular-season schedules, with the men’s season opening Aug. 28 on the road at Northwest Mississippi Community College and the women’s season starting Aug. 22 at home.

On the exhibition calendar, the men also include matches vs. Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri (Aug. 12), Coffeyville Community College at home (Aug. 15), William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri (Aug. 17), and Bethany College in Lindsborg (Aug. 19). The women will play exhibition home games against Hutchinson (Aug. 12) and Coffeyville (Aug. 15), then open the season at home against Dallas College of Eastfield (Aug. 22).
