Sumner County emergency officials track renewed flood risk after weekend water rescues

Emergency responders monitor flood conditions along a partially submerged street after heavy rain.
Heavy weekend rain left flooded roads and damaged homes across south central Kansas, prompting water rescues in Sumner County and ongoing cleanup efforts in Arkansas City. Emergency managers say first responders were working nonstop on Saturday night as water covered roads and homes took on water, with the most severe flooding reported in the county’s southern and southeastern areas. With more rain possible, officials are monitoring conditions closely and urging residents to stay weather aware. Assistant director Javan Wright says emergency managers met with local officials and developed contingency plans in case conditions worsen, while also noting that localized flooding remains possible with heavier rain. Officials say they do not currently expect flooding to reach the level seen over the weekend. They are reminding residents to avoid driving around barricades or road closures.
