Chanute-area nonprofit raffle awards truck prize while supporting local housing and services

A Chanute-area foundation’s 26th Annual Truck Raffle has a new winner: Curt Backhaus, whose ticket was drawn from 1,338 entries during the Friday, June 26 drawing, the Iola Register reports. Backhaus was notified immediately, then traveled through Chanute on Monday, July 6, to collect his prize.

Backhaus is now the owner of a 2026 Ram 1500 Express Edition truck, purchased from Shields Motor Company in Chanute. The prize came through the Friends of Tri-Valley Foundation, which uses raffle proceeds to help provide quality and affordable housing and to aid in delivering services for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Since 2001, the foundation has built six houses and acquired 10 houses and one duplex, creating homes for 90 individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Those residents live in southeast Kansas counties including Allen, Bourbon, Chautauqua, Elk, Greenwood, Neosho, Wilson, and Woodson.
