Family medicine physician Dr. David Sanger, M.D., said cyclospora infections (cyclosporiasis) can cause prolonged watery diarrhea and fatigue that may last for weeks if left untreated. He also noted that symptoms can persist for weeks or even months without treatment, and that older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for complications.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. The clinic advises contacting a health-care provider if symptoms suggest possible infection or if dehydration is a concern. The illness can be diagnosed with specialized stool testing, with results typically taking three to six days depending on the laboratory.
Ellinwood Hospital & Clinic also says Cyclospora can be treated with prescription medication when appropriate, and that persistent diarrhea should not be ignored—especially for those at higher risk. If residents believe they’ve been exposed, the clinic encourages them to reach out so the care team can evaluate symptoms and recommend testing and treatment.
