Galena landfill fire declared out as operator continues state remediation work

Remediation steps to address a smoldering fire at the Galena Landfill were successful, and the landfill operator will keep working to meet additional state requirements, a Kansas health agency spokeswoman said Tuesday, according to the Kansas Reflector.

The fire had been burning for weeks to months and was still smoldering during a June 24 inspection. The agency says the follow-up cleanup actions have now put the fire out, though more work remains to fully satisfy state obligations tied to the incident.
