Garden City set to gather 2,000 backpacks for “Stuff the Bus” drive

Garden City community agencies are teaming up for “Stuff the Bus,” an effort to collect backpacks and school supplies so children can start the school year with what they need. The donation drive runs Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with donations gathered at multiple school-bus locations across town.

School buses will be stationed in the parking lots of Dillon’s East (1305 E. Kansas Avenue), Dillon’s West (1211 Buffalo Jones Avenue), Staples (2508 E. Kansas Avenue), Target (2401 E Kansas Avenue), Walmart (3101 E. Kansas Avenue), Walmart Neighborhood Market (2424 N. Taylor Avenue), and Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux (1230 McCoy Drive). Donations are also accepted at Finney County United Way, 1509 E. Fulton Terrace.

The program’s goal is to fill 2,000 backpacks. Distribution is planned for Thursday, July 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Garfield Early Childhood Center, 121 West Walnut Street, and recipients will need to bring proof of need. Organizers say booths at the event will provide information about participating community services.

Supply donations requested include items such as glue sticks and white glue, large erasers, highlighters, watercolor paints, kid-sized scissors, 24-count crayons, #2 pencils, blue and black pens, spiral notebooks, notebook paper, two-pocket folders, dry erase markers, and white copy paper.
