KDOT to close E. Pete Smith Road access to U.S. 83 south of Garden City starting July 1

Access from E. Pete Smith Road to U.S. 83 south of Garden City will be temporarily closed beginning July 1, with the shutdown expected to last about three weeks. KDOT says Parallel Road, which was previously closed, will reopen during this period.

During the project, the ramp connecting U.S. 83B to U.S. 83 will remain closed for the duration. Southbound U.S. 83B travelers are directed to use the U.S. 83B/U.S. 83 intersection to reach U.S. 83.

KDOT links the closures to earthwork needed to complete a new U.S. 83 alignment. The project covers about 12.7 miles from roughly 2.5 miles north of the Haskell-Finney county line to the bridge over the Arkansas River, and includes reconstructing and realigning U.S. 83 into a Super 2 highway with alternating passing lanes. Additional county road closures are anticipated later this construction season, and KDOT will provide traffic updates as work progresses.

The contractor is Sporer Land Development Inc., of Oakley. The project is budgeted at $44.5 million and is expected to be completed by the end of October 2027, weather permitting. For information, contact Yazmin Moreno, KDOT Southwest public information officer, at 620-765-7080.
