Jana’s Campaign invites Kansas students to teen dating violence prevention youth council

Jana’s Campaign is seeking middle school, high school, and college-aged students across Kansas to join its Regional Youth Advisory Council, a leadership role focused on preventing relationship-based violence.

Students collaborating in a virtual youth advisory council meeting to promote healthy relationships

The Fort Hays State University-founded nonprofit—created by Dr. Curt Brungardt and Dr. Christie Brungardt in honor of their daughter, Jana Mackey—pairs youth with programming aimed at healthy relationship behaviors, warning signs of violence, and ways to build safe, healthy communities. The Youth Advisory Council brings together like-minded students from Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska to raise awareness of and prevent teen dating violence.

Members will work on developing prevention and advocacy skills through creating resources, engaging in research, and participating in training to support program facilitation. The council has also helped with an annual Bystander Intervention Training at Hays High School and provided youth input on dating experiences to guide prevention programming.

To apply, students must meet membership requirements including attending monthly or bi-monthly meetings and participating actively; meetings will be held in the evenings via Zoom. The application deadline is Aug. 27, and questions can be sent to JanasCampaign@gmail.com.
