Humboldt man pleads no contest; reduced conviction in March shooting death case

Malachi Davis, accused in the March 8 shooting death of John Paul Kent in Humboldt, has pleaded no contest and was found guilty of reduced voluntary manslaughter rather than the original second-degree murder charge, according to the Iola Register.

Davis, 25, of Humboldt, agreed to the no-contest plea to voluntary manslaughter. Allen County District Judge Daniel Creitz will sentence Davis on Aug. 3.

Prosecutors alleged Kent, 43, was involved after Davis and his girlfriend had an altercation, and the girlfriend sought refuge with a neighbor who contacted Kent. Kent’s arrival led to a verbal confrontation with Davis, who fired a single shot from his vehicle, striking Kent in the chest near the intersection of 10th and Sycamore streets in Humboldt. Kent was taken by ambulance to Allen County Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

After the shooting, Davis fled the scene. Multiple law enforcement agencies searched for him before the Kansas Highway Patrol arrested him about 3 ½ hours later near Moran. A voluntary manslaughter conviction carries a potential prison range of 55 to 247 months, a fine up to $300,000, and 36 months of post-release supervision.
