Kanopolis Drive-In receives $65,000 state grant for new digital projector

The Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded a $65,000 grant to the Kanopolis Drive-In Theatre to help offset costs of a new digital projection system, supporting the longtime outdoor venue’s continued operation.

The single-screen drive-in, which opened in 1952, sits on the northwest side of Kanopolis and features a 60-foot outdoor screen with capacity for up to 160 vehicles. The theatre’s digital projector was beyond repair last fall, with replacement costs exceeding $100,000, but a combination of community fundraising and the state grant enabled the purchase of a new 4K laser projector. The Moyers also upgraded the movie screen and projection room in preparation for the 2026 season, which opens April 3.

In addition to the upgrades, the drive-in’s programming includes first-run movies and immersive FM radio audio broadcast to vehicles, along with expanded concessions. The article also points to the venue’s family-friendly environment and notes that only about 275 drive-in theaters remain operating nationwide.

For this summer’s movie night, the Kanopolis Drive-In is hosting a “To The Stars” themed event on Thursday, July 9, with Superman (1978). Doors open at 7 p.m., and the movie begins at 8:45 p.m.
