Argentina’s late surge sends them to World Cup semifinals as they train in Kansas City

Julián Alvarez scored in the 112th minute as Argentina overcame Switzerland 3-1 to advance to the World Cup semifinals, a dramatic extra-time turnaround that capped a weekend of intense play at Arrowhead Stadium. Lautaro Martínez added a finish later in extra time, while Alexis Mac Allister scored the opening goal off a corner set up by Lionel Messi.

A late-game soccer moment depicted with stadium lighting and extra-time tension in a Kansas City–style setting.

The Swiss struck in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye, but Switzerland’s match ended with a turning-point red card after a yellow card was overturned via the World Cup’s “mistaken identity” video protocol. Argentina then pushed again in the final stretch, including late chances involving Mac Allister and Messi, before the score remained tied into extra time.

Argentina’s run to the final four will next include England. Earlier in the day, England beat Norway 2-1, setting up the semifinals matchup with Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday. For Kansas City, Argentina’s week in the region mattered: the team trained for the past month at the home of Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City, and on Saturday night the players drew a large crowd at Arrowhead Stadium during the quarterfinal round.
