A Kansas City Fire Department cadaver dog gave a soft alert in a basement more than a week before investigators later found a mass shooting suspect’s body under basement rubble, KCFD said. The dog team alerted in the course of a human remains detection search after law enforcement requested KCFD’s specialized resources.
KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said the team thoroughly searched accessible areas of a home in the 700 block of Brookside in Independence and that the department told police it was confident no body was there at the time. On Wednesday, the family of Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, found his body beneath basement rubble.
Investigators believe Sanchez-Munoz randomly shot at cars on I-670 and I-70 in the early evening of June 16; four other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. KCFD also stated that Kansas City, Kansas Police Department tipped off KCPD about who Sanchez-Munoz was after the highway shootings, which followed an earlier belief that he shot into a car in Kansas City, Kansas on June 11, when a mother and her young daughter were inside and uninjured.
KCPD said it is waiting for the medical examiner to positively identify Sanchez-Munoz and determine the cause of death.
