A Kansas City woman, Shamika Wedlow, is facing multiple charges tied to a 2025 hit-and-run crash that left a passenger dead days later. Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced Wednesday that Wedlow has been charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police responded on June 1, 2025, to the area of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Prospect Avenue on reports of an injury hit-and-run crash. Court documents say a Nissan driven by Wedlow failed to stop at a red light and crashed into a Cadillac.
After officers located the Nissan and made contact with the driver, they reportedly smelled the odor of alcohol. Three passengers were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and one passenger later died on June 9, 2025.
According to court documents, a witness who was in the vehicle with Wedlow reported that Wedlow and others had been drinking and smoking marijuana before the crash. The witness also said Wedlow got into a verbal and physical altercation with a passenger outside the vehicle, and after reentering the Nissan she began driving “in an erratic manner.” The witness described Wedlow as increasingly angry, speeding, and running red lights, and said she later prayed for her safety before blacking out.
