Most injuries involved burns, and nine of the 19 cases happened on July Fourth. Children's Mercy says the injuries most often came from sparklers, smoke bombs, firecrackers, and Roman candles; on July Fourth, four of the nine injuries involved smoke bombs, with two more involving smoke bombs occurring before that day. The hospital also reported multiple injuries to eyes and hands.
Children ranged in age from 2 to 17. Children's Mercy says most injuries were mild to moderate, though a few children will need additional treatment. One patient was admitted to the hospital.
