Rain and thunderstorms are expected to move into Kansas City later today, with lightning identified as the biggest concern. The period with the most disruptive weather is forecast for this afternoon and evening, including a window of heaviest storms from roughly 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
An active flood watch is in effect from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. A total of up to 2 inches of rain is possible, which could affect outdoor plans during the afternoon and evening.
Additional rounds are also expected: another system is forecast to move up from the south overnight, bringing more rain Friday morning. Friday calls for morning showers and thunderstorms, with spotty storms possible during the day.
Through the weekend and into at least July 5, conditions are expected to turn hot, humid, and windy, with heat index values around 100 to 105 degrees.
