Four people shot on Kansas City interstates; suspect standoff continues in Independence

Four people were wounded after a series of shootings along I-70 and I-670 Tuesday evening in Kansas City, with police saying the incidents appear connected to an earlier fatal shooting that ended in a crash near Truman Road and Bennington Avenue.

Between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., officers responded to four separate shooting victims at multiple spots along the west-to-east route, including areas ranging from Interstate 670 and Wyoming Street to Interstate 70 near The Paseo and Prospect Avenue, and to Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue. All four victims were driving eastbound when shots were fired into their vehicles; the victims were three adults and one juvenile. The juvenile was reported in stable condition, two adults had non-life-threatening injuries, and one adult was critically injured.

Detectives said the fatal incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., when a victim with a gunshot wound crashed near Truman Road and Bennington Avenue and later died at the hospital. Investigators identified a subject of interest in all five cases. Police later located the individual at a residence in Independence and said the person refused to surrender, prolonging an ongoing standoff. Fire officials were also called to the residence to control flames; police said the fire was put out.
