An extreme heat warning remains in effect for the Kansas City metro through Thursday night as heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees each afternoon, making conditions feel significantly hotter than the air temperature.
One major concern is limited overnight relief. Temperatures and humidity are expected to stay elevated after sunset, leaving homes, roads, and the human body with little chance to cool down before the next round of heat.
The National Weather Service issued the warning for the entire Kansas City metro and much of northern and western Missouri and eastern Kansas through midnight Thursday night. With multiple days of dangerous heat back-to-back, the risk of heat-related illnesses increases, particularly for older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, and anyone working or exercising outdoors.
If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours. Check on neighbors, family, and anyone who may not have reliable air conditioning. Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, even briefly.
