Kansas City man charged after northeast alley shooting; victim died days later

A Kansas City man has been charged in connection with a shooting in northeast Kansas City in which the victim later died, KMBC 9 reports. Prosecutors say Sergio Isaac Insunza Sanchez faces second-degree murder and armed criminal action charges.

Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced the charges on June 22. The case stems from a shooting reported at about 6 a.m. on June 9 in the area of Independence and Monroe avenues. Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded and transported the victim to the hospital. On June 18, police were notified that the victim had died; the victim was identified as Mark Simmons, 53.

Detectives later interviewed Simmons, who told police he was seated in a chair in a fenced area of a homeless camp when Insunza Sanchez approached from outside the fence and asked whether anyone was there. Simmons said Insunza Sanchez became agitated, began yelling and using names, and fired a single shot.

Investigators said surveillance showed a vehicle entering and leaving the area, and they used license plate readers and social media to connect Insunza Sanchez to the shooting. Court documents cited by prosecutors say Insunza Sanchez told police that on June 9 he went to the homeless camp armed with an AR-15-style rifle to purchase methamphetamine. After his June 19 interview, a judge set bond at $200,000 cash only, and an initial court appearance is scheduled for June 22.
