Kansas City residents will hear brief tornado-siren activations during daytime testing

Kansas City officials say residents in the city should not panic if they hear tornado warning sirens during testing this week. The city plans to individually test all 140 outdoor warning sirens, with each activation expected to be brief and sounded at different times throughout the day.

The testing will run between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Blue Valley Public Safety will be on hand to conduct the individual siren checks, and officials want the public to understand the soundings are not malfunctions and that no emergency is occurring.

Officials also reiterated guidance that outdoor warning sirens are intended for outdoor warning only and are not designed to be heard inside homes or businesses. They urged residents to use other methods for weather alerts, including EAS alerts on a phone, NOAA Weather Radio, or an app that delivers alerts such as the KMBC 9 News app.
