A Kansas City man has been charged after a domestic disturbance Thursday ended in a fatal shooting, according to KMBC 9. Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced that William O'Neal faces second-degree murder and armed criminal action charges.
Police responded to the 2800 block of East Sixth Street on reports of domestic violence. Court documents say officers arrived to find O'Neal at the front door speaking with three people, then shut the door as officers approached. Officers reported hearing the sound of a deadbolt, and witnesses told police O'Neal was actively beating a woman inside while someone inside was distressed.
While officers tried to get inside, they heard what they believed were gunshots and a scream. A juvenile witness exited the residence as police were responding. Officers found the victim, identified by police as Antwala Kelly, suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly afterward.
A judge set O'Neal’s bond at $300,000 cash only.
