Kansas City International Airport logged its busiest outbound passenger day ever on Sunday, July 12, helped by travel demand the day after Argentina defeated Switzerland at Kansas City Stadium. Airport officials said 24,266 outbound travelers went through security—just ahead of the previous record of 23,678 set on May 18, 2025.
While the World Cup finale delivered the first local record-breaker of the tournament, MCI has also seen consistently high volumes throughout the event. The days following matches in Kansas City have repeatedly brought surges of passengers, with eight different days surpassing 20,000 travelers through security, including 23,493 passengers the day after Argentina’s first match.
KMBC 9 reports the airport’s Aviation Department said it coordinated with partner agencies in advance and that additional staffing helped keep lines moving efficiently. Officials noted that all 16 security checkpoints were open at different times during peak travel, with support from screening partners including the Transportation Security Administration, Customs staff, and VMD, the security screening contractor.
