Police are still searching for Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, whom they believe shot at eastbound vehicles between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. One person died and four others survived, and the attacks stretched from Interstate 670 near Wyoming Street to Interstate 70 near The Paseo and Prospect Avenue before ending near Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue.
A victim crashed near Truman Road and Bennington Avenue after being shot and later died at the hospital. Police Chief Stacey Graves said Wednesday evening that all four surviving victims are expected to recover, with most in stable condition. Detectives do not know the motive.
Authorities traced the investigation to a house in the 700 block of Brookside Avenue in Independence, where police stayed throughout Wednesday. A standoff that began Tuesday night later turned into a large crime scene when a fire started inside the home; firefighters arrived around 12:44 a.m. and put out the fire. Local, state, and federal agencies—including K-9 teams—continued searching, while officers recovered a vehicle believed to be involved.
Graves said Sanchez-Munoz is considered armed and dangerous and has an outstanding Wyandotte County, Kansas warrant for aggravated assault with a $100,000 bond. Anyone who sees him should call 911; anyone with information is asked to contact 911 or the TIPS Hotline.
