Storm chances rise overnight into Thursday for the Kansas City metro; weekend rain possible

Heavy rain and a few stronger thunderstorms are possible overnight into early Thursday as two storm systems track southeast toward the Kansas City area. A first round is expected to arrive around 4 a.m., with the heaviest downpours and a few loud thunderstorms likely before storms begin weakening as they move east.

Storm clouds over a city with nighttime rain turning lighter by morning and event-goers preparing for the weekend.

Severe weather is not expected to be widespread, but heavy rainfall is the main concern, with isolated damaging wind gusts still possible if stronger storms hold together. By around 8 a.m., showers and a few lingering thunderstorms may continue but should be less intense, and the first round is expected to fizzle out by midday.

Storm chances could return Thursday afternoon, especially south of the Kansas City metro, including areas such as Butler, Warsaw, Sedalia and Marshall. Rainfall through Thursday morning will generally range from about one-half inch to around an inch north of the metro, with lighter amounts farther south; some locations could see an additional tenth to quarter inch if afternoon storms develop.

Additional showers and thunderstorms remain possible Friday into early Saturday, when many communities could total around an inch of rainfall. For the Saturday FIFA World Cup quarterfinal at Arrowhead Stadium between Argentina and Switzerland, conditions are expected to be mainly dry, with temperatures in the 80s around kickoff and staying in the low to middle 80s through the match before slipping into the upper 70s later.
