England’s bid for a spot in the semifinals comes with a local medical connection: Grau said the opportunity came after a colleague reached out when England’s staff began looking for a foot specialist. He has been a podiatrist at University Health for about three years, and since joining the team, he has worked with England’s medical staff to help players manage foot-related needs.
Grau said elite athletes are often highly attuned to their bodies, which can change how foot problems are described and addressed. He also noted that while some of his care is routine—such as nail and callus care—the stakes can feel higher when every player is focused on the World Cup.
England is one of only two World Cup teams based in the Kansas City metro, alongside defending champion Argentina. The Three Lions face Norway on Saturday afternoon for a spot in the semifinals.
