Organizers described the event as a way to bring neighbors together and celebrate soccer and culture during the FIFA World Cup. Guadalupe Centers said the watch party was intended to help people in the neighborhood experience the tournament close to home, with registration exceeding 500 and an expected turnout of 300 to 400 attendees.
Before fans settled in to watch the match on large screens throughout the venue, there was a youth soccer tournament and opportunities for community celebrations. The event drew supporters and vendors, including a Mexico fan who said the World Cup atmosphere has made Kansas City feel like it is “a party” across the city.
Guadalupe Centers plans additional World Cup watch parties next week for two more matches. KMBC 9 reported on the event.
