Westport landmark is imploded; longtime hotel site set to shift toward hospital parking

A controlled implosion brought down the former Embassy Suites hotel near Westport on Sunday afternoon, a major change for a longtime Kansas City neighborhood landmark. The demolition produced a dust cloud visible to nearby residents watching from a safe distance, with additional views captured from the air.

For some local business owners and residents, the moment carried personal meaning. Ragazza owner Laura Norris said the hotel had helped support her when she opened her restaurant near 43rd Street and Main Street, and neighbors described feeling the nearby impact as windows rattled.

After the demolition, about 2,000 yards of debris were left on property owned by St. Luke's Health System. The future of the site has not been finalized, but St. Luke's has released conceptual plans online. In the nearer term, the former hotel is expected to be replaced by a parking lot to serve St. Luke's Hospital while longer-term plans continue to develop, according to KMBC 9.
