Kansas Democrats and Republicans have set their nominees for statewide offices after Tuesday’s primary results, with the most consequential matchup shaping up for Secretary of State. Democrat Jennifer Day defeated Samuel Lane to win the nomination and will face Republican Pat Proctor of Leavenworth in the general election.
Day, a Mission businesswoman who received Gov. Laura Kelly’s endorsement, said she is preparing for the general election and highlighted voting-access changes as a priority if elected. She pointed to Kansas’ 20-day advanced voting period and said it is too short, calling for expanding it. She also said Kansas should maintain a three-day grace period for mail ballots so they can arrive and still be counted.
Proctor ran unopposed in the primary. He has been elected to the Kansas House and was described as a retired U.S. Army colonel. The article also notes Proctor is among legislative advocates for election legislation.
The statewide ticket also includes other general-election contests set after unopposed primaries, including Secretary of State’s other party’s slate and candidates for insurance commissioner, state treasurer, and attorney general.
