KDOT and Highway Patrol roll out new crash reporting system statewide

Kansas drivers and first responders will see a modernization of crash reporting as the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Highway Patrol launch the Kansas Crash Data System (KCDS), now set as the new statewide standard for law enforcement crash reporting, Western Kansas News reports.

The rollout includes sunsetting the crash report forms in the Kansas Law Enforcement Reporting (KLER) system. KDOT says the KCDS was developed using national Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (MMUCC) standards, with the goal of improving how data is collected across Kansas.

The transition is designed to streamline reporting through automated verification, improved data quality, and faster access to statewide safety information. The state gives law enforcement agencies until Sept. 1 to choose how they will connect to the new system—either by integrating their internal records management systems directly with KCDS or by using a web-based data entry form.
