KDOT opens applications for program that helps broadband providers use highway right-of-way infrastructure

The Kansas Department of Transportation is accepting applications for the Open Access Broadband Program, created to expand broadband access statewide by helping public and private partners use transportation infrastructure for broadband projects. Western Kansas News reports the program is designed to make it easier for providers to tap into KDOT-owned facilities within highway right of way, including conduit, vaults and other available infrastructure.

By relying on existing assets when possible, the program aims to reduce project costs and speed broadband deployment. Partners are expected to share the cost of ongoing system use to support maintenance and operation based on their usage.

KDOT will host a webinar at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, to explain how it will share broadband infrastructure where available with industry. Registration is available in advance for the webinar link. Additional program details and applications are posted on KDOT’s Open Access Broadband website, and inquiries can be directed to Broadband Program Manager Michael Flory at openaccessbroadband@ks.gov.
