Governor Kelly announces $13.7M+ in airport and grid-resilience grants for 18 Kansas communities

Governor Laura Kelly announced that 18 Kansas communities will receive more than $13.7 million in federal and state support for airport and energy grid resilience improvement projects. Kansas Press Association reports the awards include over $10.1 million from federal Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act (IIJA) funding and more than $3.6 million in state matching funds, bringing the total for this grant round to more than $13.9 million when local contributions are included.

The state funding is delivered through the Kansas Infrastructure Hub, which connects multiple state agencies to help communities pursue IIJA and other grant opportunities, and the Build Kansas Fund, which provides non-federal matching dollars. In related statewide support, the Build Kansas Fund has provided required match for 92 federal grants, totaling more than $51.28 million in state matching and helping bring federal grant awards of more than $161 million back to Kansas.

One funded example highlighted in the announcement is the City of Glen Elder, a rural North Central Kansas community with a population of 363. The city used a Section 40101(d) Second Round Grant and matching Build Kansas Funds to purchase new Itron radio-read electric meters for homes and businesses, addressing the need to replace older, difficult-to-read meters that the city’s tight budget could not cover outright.
