Gov. Laura Kelly has selected D.J. Lopez, an 18-year employee of the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission, to serve as acting executive director. The appointment fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Don Brownlee, who led the agency for 11 years.
Lopez joined the commission in 2008 after 13 years with the Lyons County Sheriff’s Department. Commission work has included roles in enforcement, regional security management, licensing and sports wagering, and director of gambling. Kelly said Lopez’s experience on the commission and in law enforcement will support steady leadership.
The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission regulates state-controlled gaming, including oversight of Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City; Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City; Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel in Pittsburg; and Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane. The agency also oversees sports wagering and a horse racing gambling hall in Park City, with responsibility for auditing, electronic security, and licensing.
Appointments of executive directors are subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. Kelly’s term ends in January, and the next governor could name a different administrator.
