KDOT bridge replacement will close U.S. 56 near Larned starting July 15

Bridge replacement work on the Pawnee River bridge southwest of Larned is set to begin on or around July 15, with U.S. 56 closed at the bridge during construction, Western Kansas News reports. The Kansas Department of Transportation says drivers should use the signed detour route via K-156 and U.S. 183.

With conditions permitting, KDOT expects the project to be completed by early 2027. The agency notes that when construction affects state routes, official detours are designated on nearby state highways for safety and maintenance considerations.

Bridges, Inc., based in Newton, is the primary contractor for the roughly $2.3 million project. KDOT also urges motorists to stay alert, follow posted signs, and avoid hand-held mobile device use in all active work zones.
