Lawrence commissioners set next year’s top property tax rate and will seek voter approval for higher transit funding

Lawrence city commissioners approved a maximum property tax rate for next year in a 4-1 vote, setting a spending ceiling for the city’s upcoming budget. The decision clears the way for the city to move forward with the next phase of its financial planning.

In a related action, commissioners also agreed to ask voters to approve a sales tax increase to fund Lawrence Transit. That ballot measure would provide a dedicated revenue source intended to support transit services in the city.

City leaders will now be looking toward voter consideration for the sales tax proposal that would back Lawrence Transit, while the newly approved maximum property tax rate establishes the baseline for how city property tax revenue is capped for the next year. Kansas Press Association reports on the commissioners’ approvals.
