Steve Crosby’s Hall of Fame nod spotlights Pawnee Rock roots and Fort Hays State rise

Steve Crosby, a former New York Giants player and longtime NFL coach, is set to be honored in the Kansas Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Mulvane’s Kansas Casino. The honor is tied to his football beginnings in Pawnee Rock, where his high school coach, Lorin Miller, helped shape Crosby’s early goals for a career in professional football.

Crosby credits Miller, Pawnee Rock High School’s head football coach at the time, for encouraging players’ long-term aspirations. He said Miller met with football players about how the sport fit their future plans, and Crosby recalled telling him as a 14-year-old freshman that his goal was to play pro football and later coach with Don Shula and the Miami Dolphins. During Crosby’s senior season at Pawnee Rock, the Braves finished unbeaten.

After playing quarterback and fullback at Fort Hays State and earning All-America honors, Crosby missed the 1971 season because of a U.S. Army commitment. In the NFL, he went on to play for the Giants and build a multi-faceted coaching career that included time with teams coached by Don Shula, Marty Schottenheimer, and Bill Belichick. The induction ceremony is scheduled for July 25, according to the Great Bend Tribune.
