KMBC 9 reports that the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office says a 17-year-old has pleaded guilty in the murder of 15-year-old Brianna Higgins, who was shot and killed in Olathe in January.
According to court documents, Davon D. Washington pleaded guilty to reckless second-degree murder and a charge of being a juvenile in possession of a firearm on May 8, 2024. Washington was charged in February, about 10 days after Higgins was fatally shot in Olathe.
Olathe Police Department information says Higgins, a resident of Lawrence, was taken to Olathe Medical Center on Jan. 19, 2024, around 10:51 p.m. with a critical gunshot wound. Officers helped bring her into the hospital, where she later died. She was shot near the 16900 block of West 127th Street.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Chelsea Beshore, with assistance from the Olathe Police Department and the Johnson County Crime Lab. Washington is scheduled to be sentenced on June 28, 2024.
