An hours-long standoff in an Overland Park neighborhood brought SWAT officers, armored vehicles, and a major police presence after authorities received reports of a family-related incident, KMBC 9 reports. Police say the call began at 9:40 a.m. when the man’s parents reported their son was experiencing a mental health crisis and had fired a shot at his father.
Overland Park police negotiated with the armed man for several hours. Neighbors described seeing an armored vehicle, a command post, and officers in protective gear arriving in the area. One neighbor reported being unable to leave a driveway due to the police presence and said officers caused damage when entering the home.
The standoff ended Saturday after gunfire was heard. An Overland Park police spokesman said the man ultimately took his own life. Neighbors reported the scene clearing later in the evening, and police also posted on social media that the scene was clear just before 4 p.m.
