Brown County commissioners met in regular session July 13, handling several items that directly affect county services and infrastructure in the community. The board approved Buried Cable Permit No. 26-04 for Mercury Fiber, clearing the way for a fiberoptic cable installation.
County leaders also addressed progress on federal funding work tied to area services. Brett Waggoner of Governmental Assistance Services and Karen Wilson of the Northeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging (NEKAAA) requested a completion extension for the NEKAAA CDBG project. Commissioners authorized the chairman to execute a letter and form requesting a five-month extension for the CDBG project 23-PF-012.
On the broader operational side, commissioners discussed options for purchasing a solid waste backhoe and considered purchasing fuel, along with topics including railroad crossings and bridge approaches. They also approved signing an Environmental Review Exemption for the Continuum of Care (CoC) Program.
County finance items were approved as well, including July 8 payroll and July 13 claims. A separate work session later that day focused on discussion of the proposed 2027 Brown County budget, with no action taken.
