Fireworks sold in Salina are only legally allowed to be discharged within city limits on July 3 and July 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the Salina Fire Department reminded residents. The department is urging people to celebrate Independence Day safely and follow City of Salina fireworks regulations.
Residents are told to use fireworks only on private property with the property owner’s consent, and never on public property or roadways. Fireworks also cannot be used under, in, or from a vehicle, and they are prohibited within 100 feet of hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other restricted locations. Violations can result in a notice to appear and fines.
The department asked for extra caution this year because recent storms have left behind brush, limbs, and other debris that can increase the risk of fire. Dry brush and accumulated debris can ignite quickly if fireworks land nearby, so residents are encouraged to avoid using fireworks near those areas when possible. People should have a bucket of water, fire extinguisher, or garden hose ready, light one firework at a time, never relight malfunctioning fireworks, supervise children closely, and fully soak spent fireworks before disposal.
For fireworks complaints, the department says 911 is not for reporting fireworks unless there is a fire or related emergency. Residents should call the non-emergency line at 785-826-7210.
