NewsRadio 1150 KSAL reports that Saturday marks 51 years since the last death of a police officer in Salina in the line of duty.
According to the coverage, Patrolman Jerry Ivey, 27, was shot and killed on Friday, June 13, 1975, after he attempted to stop a car tied to a robbery. The suspect was identified as Roy Earl Shultz, who had a Browning high-powered 9-mm semi-automatic pistol. The report says Ivey and Shultz exchanged gunfire, and as Ivey reached for his shotgun, he was shot in the back.
KSAL also states that Shultz was later caught after a chase and more gunfire, convicted of first degree murder, and sentenced to life. The account adds that six days later, Shultz encountered a family near Washington, Illinois, leading to further violence and a failed attempt to assault the child. Shultz died January 2, 1984.
