Salina police still investigating 1977 homicide of Lift Tavern owner

Nearly 50 years after a Salina man was reported missing, his death remains unsolved. Thomas “Tom” Young—owner/operator of The Lift Tavern at 150 S. Broadway in Salina—was reported missing by his family on July 11, 1977.

An employee reported walking out of the business with Young late on July 10, 1977, at about 12:45 a.m., then seeing Young walk back into the business. When the employee returned on July 11, Young’s 1977 white Corvette was still in the parking lot and the business was secured. Young’s body was discovered on July 12, 1977, at the Raggedy Ann Tavern at 260 Smithers in Salina, which Young owned and was in the process of being remodeled. The cause of death was listed as homicide.

For 49 years, the Salina Police Department has continued investigating, including developing new leads, re-examining evidence, re-interviewing witnesses, and contacting persons of interest. The department is asking community members who may have information related to Young’s murder to call (785) 826-7210.
