Salina’s Fire Prevention Officer launches Fireworks Bucket Brigade; limited free buckets left

Salina Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Officer Matt Rittel has launched the Salina Fireworks Bucket Brigade for the Independence Day season, creating a free way for residents to dispose of spent fireworks more safely. Rittel says the department collected 800 five-gallon buckets donated by local businesses, and the program is now so popular that only a limited number remain. Residents are encouraged to place used fireworks in the bucket, fill it with water, let the contents soak overnight, and dispose of the material the next day. Rittel ties the steps to reducing the risk of fires caused by improperly discarded fireworks. The free buckets will be distributed at fireworks tents located within Salina city limits, with one bucket available per household while supplies last.
